If one looks at its ugly mug, you'll notice it actually has a somewhat human-like face, or something far closer to one compared to all the other leviathans. I think it's because the Reaper falls somewhat into the uncanny valley. But the Reaper? I always end up skedaddling when I get the first whiff of their presence. For every other Leviathan, I can confidently walk on by with little fear, sometimes even sticking around to watch them. But by my third playthrough, 40 hours in, I was actively dreading going anywhere near their prowling grounds, and listening for their distinctive roar was something I always did when exploring areas I haven't before. It's not like I had nothing but violent run-ins either, I've had plenty of times where a Reaper just didn't notice me or attack and I got away scot-free, and my Seamoth had only ever been grappled like, once. And originally, the Reaper was the same.except I got more scared of it as I played. I legit find the Ghost Leviathan weirdly pretty, the Sea Dragon is easy to avoid in both the Prawn and Cyclops, the Chelicerate is just sort of.there, and the Shadow Leviathan was more of an annoyance than a threat to me. This applies to the leviathans across both games, as after the original intimidation factor I start to view them less like sea monsters and more like really angry seafood. Don't know why I don't, maybe it's how easy the game is, maybe it's the fact I treat the animals in the game like, well, wild animals, and keeping my distance and not tarrying has proved to be the most effective means of dealing with them. My immediate reaction was "hey, come back! LET ME SCAN YOU!" When I got to the top, a huge ass face emerged from the depths and took a huge chunk of my health. Greeaaat.I remember when I first came across the Reaper I was swimming around the grassy plateaus, I started to move up a large rock formation, closer to the Aurora. He kept going for a good twice his height before dropping down back in the water. Roaring, twirling, flying like a majestic noodle. Then suddenly the Reaper flies out of the water. So I went up to the surface to navigate how what side of the mountain I was, maybe I wasn't in the right spot and just missed him. I tried using my sonar but still didn't pick up any Reapers in the area. Since I still needed a Reaper in my PDA, I decided to pack light with just my moth, stasis rifle, scanner a glider. I kept the Reaper in this area on my scanner just in case, but one moment he just disappeared. I was minding my own business up in the Norther mushroom kingdom, a bit west of the Mountain island. The scariest Leviathan encounter I've had must be the Reaper encounter I've had a few days ago. At that point, I made sure to start swinging faster and faster until I got to base, put down my headset, and processed what just happened. It slammed against the ribs of the skeleton, losing interest in my squishy center and hard outer shell. The GL had been charging at my Prawn the entire I time since I heard the first roar. I swing in between two ribs of a gargantuan skeleton, and I look behind me. I continue swinging, this time a little freaked out. I finally find it, I do whatever I was there to do, and decide to go home. That sighting should have been my first warning. I was swinging from place to place in my happy little Prawn. I have had 2 close calls with a GL, but neither were able to bite me. (From now on GL) Now, this by itself isn't so scary. (From now on LR) And I'm sure you recognize that there are some Ghost Leviathans in there.
